Walking on Water (Day 3)
John 6:19
They had rowed three or four miles when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified…

Twenty or thirty furlongs is approximately three miles (Apostolic Study Bible, note for John 6:18–19). The fact the disciples had rowed any distance in the storm is impressive and a testament to the fishermen on board who were accustomed to stormy weather. However, despite their seafaring résumés, none of them had ever seen someone walk on the water, which is why they instinctively responded with fear.
It was a beautiful warm spring day. While his mother was cleaning the kitchen, one- year-old Chase was looking out the window. He was fascinated by the birds flying between the trees. Suddenly, Chase began screaming in terror.
His mother dropped everything and ran to her son, expecting to find blood. Why else would her son be screaming? Instead, she found her son screaming while pointing out the window at a squirrel. In his short life, Chase had never seen a squirrel. When faced with something new, his first response was fear.
When you encounter or experience something new, what is your initial response? Do certain opportunities or expectations evoke a fear response more than a faith response?
That concludes our devotional for today. Let us finish with a word of prayer.
WORD OF PRAYER
Lord Jesus, as I reflect on the moment when the disciples saw You walking on water, and their immediate reaction of terror, I am reminded of my own tendencies to react with fear when faced with the unknown. Just like the disciples, I too have moments when the extraordinary works of Your hands startle me, revealing the limits of my faith and understanding.
Help me, Lord, to recognize Your presence in the unexpected and the miraculous. Teach me to respond with faith rather than fear when I encounter circumstances that are beyond my understanding or control. Strengthen my trust in You, knowing that You are sovereign over all creation, including the storms of life and the uncertainties I face.
Transform my fear into faith, Lord. Let me see opportunities for growth and trust in You, rather than reasons for fear. Encourage me to step out in faith, even when the path ahead seems uncertain or impossible by human standards. Remind me that with You, all things are possible, and that Your presence is a constant source of strength and peace.
In moments of fear, let me remember the disciples' encounter with You on the water, and how You calmed their fears. May I always be quick to recognize You in every situation, embracing Your will and Your way with open arms and a trusting heart.
In the name of Jesus, amen.
